Cusco Oil Catch Can Install Another Opinion on Installation Building your own DIY: Build an OIL Catch Can. Our goal was to create a custom dual catch can, half to catch the coolant overflow from the radiator and the other half to trap and contain oil from the crankcase.
Hello guys, I will be self-installing a Mishi compact catch can on my own. I do think I can manage it on my own but I honestly need to clarify my understanding of specifically where the inlet and the outlet ports on the Mishi are connected to. I gather the tube connected to the INLET of the catch can goes directly to the PCV connector; the tube connected to the OUTLET of the Mishi will be connected to the tube that was originally pulled of the PCV itself. Thanking you in advance for assistance. Much obliged. Best advice I can give is to watch this video. Your can mounting point will be different but the lines you are tapping into will be one of the two installed in the video.
An AOS should have been a factory piece of equipment. It isn't really performance related (although the oil vapor put into your intake air does lower effective octane rating of the fuel when mixed) it is typically done to prevent the oil mixing with the carbon recycled from the EGR system and sticking to the intake plenums, head ports and valves. This will happen with or without other aftermarket items. The upper intake cleaner done occasionally will also help with the carbon buildup but without an AOS or catch can it will build up more quickly and more likely cause running issues. TLDR: You don't have to do one but plan on having to do the upper intake cleaner more often and be on the lookout (listen) for signs of detonation or shuddering in acceleration. I installed a Mishimoto catch can 03/16 and checked it today. It has been a little over 200 miles.
Not sure why there is such a fuss about going through the trouble of the additional maintenance??? I guess I'm someone who likes to change my oil on time/early depending on how I drive.
I like to vacuum my house once or twice a week too. After the effort of unscrewing the catch can (for the record. Way more threads then a light bulb. Good grief) I managed to take it off. I collected a small viscous amount of oil. Definitely not water like as some may have seen with Ford Ecoboost motors, but definitely oil.
It appeared clean like new 5w30. When I took off the PCV elbow, it had a nice layer of oil. I'm looking forward to returning additional findings. Good luck on the install. The Mishimoto comes with 2 plastic 1/2' fittings. For the PCV can I ordered two aluminum fittings.one 3/8' for the input and a 1/2' for the output. Here are the links to those parts at Summit: PM me if you have any questions.
Hi ad701xx, I'm about to order same two mishi cans for my 17xt and thinking to get one for wife's 18' crosstrek from summit by your link. And also was looking to order fittings and hoses.
Need little help on hoses for XT. So for PCV I think I need: Two 3/8' hoses for PCV (3/8' is the size of the original PCV hose). Two aluminum fittings 3/8'.
Why did you use different fittings sizes, 3/8 for in and 1/2 for out? For CCV: Two hoses 5/8' size with two 5/8 connectors to connect original hose which I will cut. Two aluminum fittings 5/8' sizes.
Four clamps Please correct me if I'm wrong, And which type of hose did you use? Im thinking to order rubber fuel line hoses from summit. Appreciate your help.

I bought one of these but with all the reading I've done I am now somewhat confused as to how to insert/connect it to the system. I assumed I would be intercepting the vent pipes somewhere and running them through the can (I 've made up a filter to help remove the oil between the in and out pipes and a small gauge mesh filter on the outlet to make sure none of the filter material, SS kitchen pot scrubbers, comes back up the line) to remove as much oil as possible, and then back to where it was going before. I read some guys saying I must vent to atmosphere, which seems a bit irresponsible, and a few others talking about positive crankcase pressure/vacuum, relative to turbocharged engines. This second one makes sense to me as I am just trying to add a filtration system.
